Teatro Regio Torino - Galleria Tamagno
In the context of EXPOSED Torino Foto Festival
In the life of every opera and theatre artist, there is a suspended moment — a state in which they are no longer simply themselves, yet not quite characters either. It is an elusive instant, often invisible to most, that involves soloist singers as well as chorus members, young choristers, and performers alike. Dressed and made up as the roles they are about to bring to life on stage, they are not yet those characters, and at the same time, they no longer resemble who they are in real life.
The images in this exhibition — selected from thousands taken at the Teatro Regio over the past three decades — capture, through facial expressions and moments disconnected from the stage narrative, the unique disorientation of this “in-between land” that lies between reality and fiction. At the same time, they reveal the truth of a craft that is as evocative as it is intricate.
In homage to the theme of EXPOSED Torino Photo Festival 2025 — Beneath the Surface — these photographs take the viewer’s gaze where the audience’s eye cannot reach: beyond the curtain, backstage, past every boundary that separates the stage from the space inhabited by the community of spectators.
Each frame also tells a story of the surfaces that define the internal landscape of Carlo Mollino’s Teatro Regio: from carpet to concrete, white marble to the famous indigo of the auditorium dome. Isolated from their context, these surfaces become unexpected facets of an unorthodox and one-of-a-kind architecture — revealing, for once, the invisible to the eye.
