A unique “tetralogy” to rediscover the Italian soul
Four operas, two composers, a single conductor. With this ambitious formula, Teatro Regio opens its 2026/2027 Season with the Verismo Festival, conducted by Andrea Battistoni and staged by Daniele Menghini and Francesco Micheli. The project rediscovers the roots of an aesthetic that is more relevant today than ever, one that portrays extreme passions and social contradictions with undiminished urgency.
The project grew out of a desire to escape the “trap” of established success, inviting audiences to look beyond the best-known titles. Alongside the unsurpassed archetypes of Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci, we rediscover Leoncavallo’s Bohème, born out of a creative rivalry with Puccini, and the dazzling Iris, a pinnacle of orchestral refinement that paved the way for the lyricism of Madama Butterfly. An act of love for our musical heritage, presented in 22 performances over the course of five weeks.
The flexibility of the programme allows audiences to enjoy these masterpieces over the course of a month, or as a compact cycle over three consecutive days during the first two weekends of November. An opportunity designed for international audiences to discover the beauty of Italian Verismo – and of a surprising city, rich in countless facets and pleasures: Turin.
