To bring out the immediate beauty of Bernstein’s and Britten’s music, the podium welcomes Wayne Marshall, one of the foremost interpreters of 20th-century American and British repertoire. Opening the program are Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, a selection of Hebrew psalms that blend stark melodic simplicity with striking tonal effects; these are followed by the Three Dance Variations from the American composer’s ballet Fancy Free, capturing the exuberance of young sailors on shore leave in New York. Closing the performance are the Passacaglia and the Four Sea Interludes for orchestra from Britten’s opera Peter Grimes, masterfully evoking the cry of gulls and the phosphorescence of the sea.
