Abyss

Andrea Battistoni

The new Music Director of the Regio, Andrea Battistoni, plunges into the mysteries of Heaven and Hell with three late 19th-century works. Tchaikovsky’s Francesca da Rimini Fantasy conveys the torments of Dante’s Inferno with a swirling orchestration. The Song of Destiny, a powerful choral piece by Brahms set to Hölderlin’s verses, contrasts the bliss of the Elysian Fields with the wandering life of mortals. The Prologue from Heaven from Boito’s Mefistofele, inspired by Goethe’s Faust, frames the devil’s challenge to God between celestial songs—here performed by the extraordinary Erwin Schrott.
