An autumnal atmosphere, full of a sense of ending and transcendence, pervades the Vier letzte Lieder by Strauss and Symphony No. 4 by Brahms, the two works entrusted to the refined direction of Bertrand de Billy in his first collaboration with the TRT Philharmonic. In the Lieder, his last great creation, Strauss wrapped the soprano voice he adored in a lush orchestra: Maria Bengtsson conveys the twilight brilliance of these works. Symphony No. 4 is a work of grand and fatal tone: with it Brahms definitively bid farewell to this genre.
