By playing with the codes of opera seria, the director Tobias Kratzer and the conductor Antonello Manacorda enhance the link between reason of state and love intrigue that underlies the plot. Ancient Rome is replaced by a contemporary, dark setting, in which illusion and reality merge. But Silla’s message remains timeless: «There is no triumph to equal / the victory over one’s own heart».
