Porgy and Bess | George Gershwin
Everyone knows Summertime, but few know that it is one of the wonderful songs of this “folk opera” with which Gershwin ended prematurely his career. Aspects of jazz, spirituals, musicals and theatre are the ingredients of the greatest American opera of the twentieth century, an authentic cross-section of Afro-American life.

Caftish Row, un sobborgo di Charleston in South Carolina, nella comunità di colore. È una sera d’estate: c’è chi balla e chi gioca a dadi; Clara canta una ninna nanna al suo bambino. Porgy, un mendicante storpio che si muove grazie a una carretta trainata da una capra, viene preso in giro perché è innamorato di Bess, la donna di Crown, un capo squadra al porto che sniffa “polvere d’angelo” comprata da Sporting Life. Crown, già ubriaco, arriva insieme a Bess. Mentre sta giocando a dadi, litiga con Robbins e lo uccide. Crown, spronato da Bess, fugge, e la polizia arresta Peter, venditore di miele. Bess si nasconde nella stanza di Porgy.

Un mese dopo. Porgy è felice perché Bess ora è la sua donna. Ma Porgy è turbato dal volo di una poiana, un uccello che secondo lui annuncia sventure. Tutti si preparano per un picnic a Kittiwah Island. Porgy non può raggiungerli e convince Bess a parteciparvi. Lì Bess incontra Crown, che si era nascosto per sottrarsi alla polizia. Crown la costringe a fermarsi con lui sull’isola. Sfuggita, Bess torna a Caftish Row e confessa tutto a Porgy, il quale le promette che la proteggerà da Crown. Si annuncia un uragano terribile. Clara teme per il marito Jake che è in mare; Crown promette di aiutarla nelle ricerche e giura che tornerà a prendere Bess.

L’uragano è finito; tutti credono che Crown sia morto, ma lui torna e vuole riprendersi la sua donna. Porgy si batte con Crown e lo uccide. Quando arriva la polizia, Porgy viene condotto all’obitorio per riconoscere il cadavere; al suo rifiuto viene arrestato. Sporting Life fa credere a Bess che l’uomo rimarrà per molto tempo in carcere, così la convince a partire con lui per New York. Quando Porgy viene rilasciato cerca invano Bess, e quando scopre che è partita per New York, decide di mettersi in viaggio alla sua ricerca.
